The Nags Head Board of Commissioners voted in favor of the Committee's Septic Health Plan and in the fall of 2000 the Town of Nags Head implemented the Septic Health Initiative. Because of the Septic Committee's work and cooperation by the Board of Commissioners, septic improvements on a large scale could now begin in Nags Head.
These improvements would be accomplished through public education (do's and don't s of septic use), detailed septic inspection and tank pumping, while monitoring ground and surface water quality for the duration of the overall program.
After six years of work and study, the Septic Health Initiative's inspection and water quality data were used to develop a Decentralized Wastewater Master Plan. Today this plan is Nags Head's long-term strategy in protecting water quality while allowing the continued use of on-site wastewater systems. The Town is currently working to update and revise this plan (2018-2019)
