MEDIA RELEASE MAY 4, 2001 12:00 NOON THE NAGS HEAD POLICE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES THAT AT APPROXIMATELY 2315 HOURS OF THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2001 THAT THREE B/M’S, STEVEN LEMONT FUTRELL, ANTONIO MARCEL CAHOON, AND MARCUS T. DUNSTON-PRUITT WERE ARRESTED BY NAGS HEAD AND KILL DEVIL HILLS POLICE OFFICERS ON U.S. 158 BYPASS AND THE ENTRANCE TO THE K-MART PARKING LOT IN THE TOWN OF KILL DEVIL HILLS.
ON MAY 3, 2001 AT APPROXIMATELY 2100 HOURS, NAGS HEAD POLICE DIVISION RECEIVED A CALL FROM DARE CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS THAT AN ARMED ROBBERY WAS OCCURRING AT THE BP STATION LOCATED AT 6320 S. CROATAN HIGHWAY IN THE TOWN OF NAGS HEAD. UPON ARRIVING ON THE SCENE THE PATROL OFFICERS RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION FROM THE STORE CLERK ON DUTY:
AT APPROXIMATELY 8:55 PM TWO BLACK MALES ENTERED THE STORE AND WALKED TO THE BACK AREA OF THE STORE. SHORTLY AFTER WHILE THE STORE CLERKS’ BACK WAS TURNED ONE BLACK MALE CAME UP FROM BEHIND POINTING A SMALL HANDGUN DEMANDING THE CLERK TO "GIVE ME YOUR MONEY". THE SUSPECTS DEMANDED THAT THE STORE CLERK OPEN BOTH THE CASH REGISTER AND THE STORE SAFE. AFTER REMOVING THE MONEY FROM BOTH, THE LARGER B/M SUSPECT DEMANDED THE STORE CLERK TO ENTER INTO THE BACK ROOM, INSTRUCTING THE CLERK TO STAY IN THERE AND NOT TO COME OUT. THEN BOTH SUSPECTS FLED THE SCENE OF THE CRIME.
AFTER NAGS HEAD POLICE OFFICER DEAN MCMANUS INTERVIEWED THE STORE CLERK, HE PROMPTLY RADIOED THE DESCRIPTION OF THE VEHICLE AND SUSPECTS TO DARE CENTRAL COMMUNICATIONS CENTER, WHO PROMPTLY INITIATED A BULLETIN TO ALL ON DUTY OFFICERS IN DARE COUNTY.
PATROLMAN JOHN TOWLER, OF THE KILL DEVIL HILLS POLICE DEPARTMENT RECEIVED THE BULLETIN WHILE OPERATING STATIONARY NEAR THE COLINGTON INTERSECTION IN THE TOWN OF KILL DEVIL HILLS. SHORTLY AFTER, PATROLMAN TOWLER OBSERVED A VEHICLE MATCHING THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BULLETIN HEADING NORTH ON U.S. 158 BYPASS. HE INITIATED A VEHICLE STOP ON A 1998 HONDA PASSENGER COUPE, OPERATED BY MARCUS T. DUNSTON-PRUITT, AND OCCUPIED BY ANTONIO CAHOON AND STEVEN FUTRELL. THE THREE SUSPECTS WERE HELD AT THE SCENE AWAITING A POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION BY THE STORE CLERK. A NAGS HEAD POLICE OFFICER TRANSPORTED THE STORE CLERK TO THE SCENE OF THE VEHICLE STOP WHERE A POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION WAS MADE.
AT THAT TIME ALL THREE SUSPECTS WERE ARRESTED AND TRANSPORTED TO THE NAGS HEAD POLICE DEPARTMENT FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION.
ANTONIO MARCEL CAHOON, WHO IS 20 YEARS OF AGE AND LISTS HIS PERMANENT ADDRESS IN CRESWELL, NORTH CAROLINA, HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH THE CRIMINAL CHARGE OF ARMED ROBBERY.
STEVEN LEMONT FUTRELL, WHO IS 21 YEARS OF AGE AND LISTS HIS PERMANENT ADDRESS IN MURFESBORO, NORTH CAROLINA, HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH THE CRIMINAL CHARGES OF ARMED ROBBERY AND FIRST DEGREE KIDNAPPING.
MARCUS T. DUNSTON-JOHNSON, WHO IS 21 YEARS OF AGE AND LISTS HIS PERMANENT ADDRESS IN LOUISBURG, NORTH CAROLINA, HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH THE CRIMINAL CHARGES OF ARMED ROBBERY AND FIRST DEGREE KIDNAPPING.
ALL THREE DEFENDANTS CURRENTLY ARE ENROLLED AS STUDENTS AT ELIZABETH CITY STATE UNIVERSITY, LOCATED IN ELIZABETH CITY, NC.
